I am so proud of the team behind LDD and the greater virtual building community. They took ownership and created the most amazing virtual LEGO models and have grown the virtual building ecosystem. Builders-enthusiasts and professionals alike-have used LDD in wonderful and unexpected ways. “I am so impressed with how the community of creators has evolved. “Our initial vision for LEGO Digital Designer back in 2002 was to make building on a computer accessible and fun for children – to play with and share their creations online.” said Ronny Scherer, producer of the first-generation LEGO Digital Designer. Now after almost twenty years since its conception and eighteen years in distribution, LEGO Digital Designer will retire and pass the mantle to BrickLink Studio as the officially supported and maintained 3D building application. It has played a prominent role in various offerings, from LEGO Factory, LEGO Design ByME, LEGO video games and movies. LDD pioneered real-time rendering of LEGO bricks, virtual brick connectivity, and the compact LEGO Exchange file format (LXF) which made LEGO models built in LDD light and portable. LEGO Digital Designer was released in 2004 as the LEGO Group’s 3D building tool.

While downloaded versions of the LDD application will continue to work, people are encouraged to download BrickLink Studio, import their LDD files, and use Studio for 3D LEGO building files, and use Studio for 3D LEGO building. The LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) website will close on January 31st, after which time LDD will no longer be available for download.

LPE Power also has some wonderful instructions on how to build real car technology with LEGO.Today, the LEGO Group announces that BrickLink Studio will replace LEGO Digital Designer as the official virtual LEGO building software going forward. Check out his book “ The Unofficial LEGO Technic Builder’s Guide” or visit his website. In particular the work Pawel “Sariel” Kmiec.

I looked for inspiration on the internet and found many great off road cars, trial trucks and multi purpose car technology. I started to build my own cars right away. I ordered the set, but when it arrived I never put it together. Recently, LEGO released the 4×4 Crawler and it really triggered something inside of me. In the past, LEGO also had remote controlled cars that use radio frequencies, which is much better, since it does not require a line of sight and has a much further reach. Power Functions use infrared light for communication between the sender and the receiver. LEGO has many Technic cars in their program that use the Power Functions to remote control certain functions, such as opening doors or lifting an arm. It has long been a dream of mine to build a remote controlled LEGO car. Here is a video that explains the model’s function:Īuthor Christoph Bartneck Posted on OctoOctoCategories Design, Featured, LEGO Tags crawler, ev3, gear box, lego, mindstorms, sequential, technic, windstorms Leave a comment on LEGO Digital Crawler with EV3 Controlled Gear Box 3D LEGO Technic Connector In the LDD model I also had to use other shocks. I also put up the model are ReBrickable and the inventory there is almost complete. These bricks do not yet exist in digital form. Please notice that I had to replace the 35188 Technic Changeover Rotary Catch with another gear in the digital model and I could also not include Mindsensors Glide Wheel Rotation Sensor. The building instructions are available for LEGO Digital Designer and Stud.io. The remote uses two rotation sensors to measure speed and direction. The two EV3 Mindstorms communicate using Bluetooth. It also allows you to change gears and change the forward and backward drive. The remote control used force feedback and offers proportional control over speed and direction. This LEGO remote controlled crawler uses a sequential gearbox from Sariel and a Mindstorms EV3 to control the car.
